How-to
Install Firefox Tv
Reference:
- Youtube - Install Firefox On Android TV OS Devices like NVIDIA SHIELD TV and Xiaomi Mi Box
First method:
- In Google Play Store, install downloader app.
- In download app, download
https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/firefox-tv/releases/download/v4.7.1/firefox-tv-4.7.1.apk
- Install apk, and if necessary, give permission to install external apk. Apk can be deleted afterwards.
Second method:
- Download firefox tv release on some network drive accessible to Shield Pro (mounted).
- In Google Play Store, install the simple File Manager from HiMedia.
- Visit the (mounted) network share, and select the apk.
- Pin a page
- Open the page
- Press the menu button on remote
- Note: The menu button on the remote must be customized to send the
menu
command.
- Click the pin button
Use MiXplorer
Let's try a simple file explorer to easily find the latest downloaded video.
Some candidates (see also [2]):
MiXplorer seems the best candidate for now:
- Nice interface to browse the NAS, with file sort by date (most recent).
- Can launch video in Kodi, VLC, or any other player.
- To play video from NAS, first add the NAS as a SMB share (don't use mounted shares).
- Using direct link works (no need to copy temporarily).
- MiXplorer player: Codec add-ons cannot be installed (apparently not compatible with Shield TV)
- Manual: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65157342&postcount=2
- Edit bookmarks:
- Swipe text on the right.
- Move icons up and down to sort.
- Using the History is also very handy.
- Add a shortcut to Home / Bookmarks
- Select a file, and long press
- Select triple vertical dots, then add to..., then select either Home screen or Bookmarks, or Home...
- Questions
- I selected direct link to view video, and set remember. How can I un-remember it?
Play a video on NAS
- Kodi
- Add NAS as repository
- Scan for new changes
- Select the movie in the library, or in the folder list (! title might be wrong).
- Navigate in menu to select audio and subtitles.
- VLC
- ???
- MiXplorer
- Open NAS bookmark
- Navigate to folder
- Click, select direct link if asked, then select either Kodi, VLC, or any other player.
- VLC seems best for choosing audio / subtitles.
Play a video on internet
- Chromecast
- ???
- Firefox TV
- With https://animedigitalnetwork.fr/, playback smoother than browser, but still not as smooth as on PC.
- Firefox Browser
- With https://animedigitalnetwork.fr/, very shaky playback.
- Puffin browser
- ???
Applications
- Browsers
- Firefox TV
- Downloader (more for sideloading)
- Firefox browser (
arm64-v8a Android 5.0+ nodpi
)
- File Manager
- MiXplorer
- File Manager from HiMedia.
- Plex
- Error when creating the server. The fix is to disable the addition of libraries.
- Also, set remote streaming quality to maximum. Not sure this was necessary (did it because forbid transcoding on NAS, but in principle it should not be remote...)
- Configure the server by visiting http://192.168.1.88:32400/web/
- Add storage on NAS (family/movie).
