Duck pattern

From Dilbert 2007-02-02:

  • PHB: Why did you add this button to the user interface?
  • Dilbert: You told me to.
  • PHB: Why would I tell you that?
  • Dilbert: You always suggest random changes to create the illusion of adding value.
  • PHB: Well, remove that button.
  • Dilbert: It's only on your copy.

This refers to the Duck pattern [1], ie. developping a feature for the sole purpose of having it removed by reviewers / management. This refers to the development of the Battle Chess game, where an animation artist added a flying duck in the animation of the queen. Also known as Red herring.
