Find modular square roots

Let P a prime, and 1<=a<P, the problem is to find x s.t. x*x = a mod P.

  • If P=2, trivial (x=a).
  • If P=3 mod 4, x = a^((p+1)/4) mod p.
  • If P=1 mod 8, so short method is given, but there is a typo and it doesn't work.
  • If P=3 mod 8, uses Shanks method (a Newton-Raphson like method).
