Introduction

This is the configuration page for the Windows partition on Zyratastic.

1st install

  • Automatically install important and recommended updates
  • Turn on all privacy settings (Windows SmartScreen, Internet Explorer SmartScreen, Do Not Track)
  • Do not send information to MS
  • ...
  • 'Turn off Windows Location Platform
  • Microsoft account: marie-ms@immie.org, Marie, Tastic, born on 21 july 1989
    Changed to Local account on second reinstall.

Windows 8.1 Upgrade

  • Settings similar to above

After upgrade, don't forget:

  • Run disk cleanup for system files. It will free >15GB of old windows installation. Better do this with Restore Points disabled.
    If clean up gets stuck, see this guide. Basically:

    • Restart

Factory reset
Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from factory reset
  • The process failed with a Ubuntu dual boot. No much reason given.
  • From a factory reset, first apply all windows update, both security & recommended.
    • Apply patches in chronological order! For instance, by interval of 6 months.
    • Apply recommended patches at the end
  • Go to windows store, start windows 8.1 update.
