Introduction

This is the configuration page for the Windows partition on Zyratastic.

TO DO AFTER A RESTORE
  • Re-enable page file
  • Re-enable System Restore Points
  • Run Windows Update

After upgrade to Windows 8.1

Restore
  • new enable Windows Restore, allocate 3% disk (~5GB)

  • new Uninstalled again (because force to have an online account)

  • new Disable' Turn on fast start-up (in Define power buttons...)'
  • In BIOS, disable fast boot and disable secure boot

Detailed System Settings

1st install

  • Country: Belgium, Language: English (United States)', Keyboard layout: Belgian french
  • Color: 9th (blue-ish)
  • PC name: zyratastic
  • Connect to wifi
  • Yes, turn on sharing and connect to devices
  • Automatically install important and recommended updates
  • Turn on all privacy settings (Windows SmartScreen, Internet Explorer SmartScreen, Do Not Track)
  • Do not send information to MS
  • ...
  • 'Turn off Windows Location Platform
  • Microsoft account: marie-ms@immie.org, Marie, Tastic, born on 21 july 1989
    Changed to Local account on second reinstall.

Windows 8.1 Upgrade

  • Settings similar to above

After upgrade, don't forget:

  • Run disk cleanup for system files. It will free >15GB of old windows installation. Better do this with Restore Points disabled.
    If clean up gets stuck, see this guide. Basically:
    • Cancel Clean up
    • Restart
    • Troubleshoot → Windows Update → Advanced → Run as administrator → clict next.
    • In a Command prompt (admin)
sfc /scannow
  • Restart disk cleanup
  • Disable hibernate (not used, we use sleep instead). In an admin console:
powercfg -h off

Rescue, Upgrade

Factory reset
Upgrade to Windows 8.1 from factory reset
  • The process failed with a Ubuntu dual boot. No much reason given.
  • From a factory reset, first apply all windows update, both security & recommended.
    • Apply patches in chronological order! For instance, by interval of 6 months.
    • Apply recommended patches at the end
  • Go to windows store, start windows 8.1 update.

  • Issue — Font blur in some applications (e.g. Disk Management). NT Explorer still ok though.
  • To Do — See how much is allocated to Windows Restore on the ASUS N750K.
  • To Do — Restore the ASUS entry in EFI partition.
